Cancer Update
For years cancer has been considered the second leading cause of death. However on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, the American Cancer Society released its annual statistical report revealing that cancer has now replaced heart disease as the top killer for Americans under 85, a group that comprises 98.4% of the population. Only the very oldest Americans continue to die more from heart disease than cancer, and even that is expected to reverse by 2018. In 2002 (the most recent information available) 476,009 Americans died from cancer compared with 450,637 who died from heart disease. The growing trend of cancer deaths overtaking heart disease actually began in 1999. Similar statistics are also being reported in other countries, such as Great Britain, where between 1950 and 1999 deaths from cancer rose from 15% to 27% in men and from 16% to 23% in England and Wales. Today in Britain 1.23 people die from cancer for every one person who dies from heart disease. Even in British men, who have been more prone to heart disease, it is estimated that during 2005 there will be 65,000 deaths from heart disease compared to 75,000 deaths from cancer. Cancer kills 5.5 Americans for every one who dies from injury resulting from all forms of accidents combined. An estimated 1,372,910 new cancer cases and 570,260 cancer deaths are expecting during 2005. About 232,090 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and it will kill 30,350. About 211,350 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and it will kill 40,410. Response Heart disease patients have benefited greatly from recent advances in new techniques, and through the introduction of new medical devices that have dramatically reduced the rate of heart disease fatalities over recent years. We believe that cancer therapy must now undergo a similar revolution through the adoption of new medical technology designed to combat what has now become the number one killer. #### For More Information Contact: |
